black spiny-tailed iguanas

Paya Bay is a refuge for the Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas (Ctenosaura oedirhina). These ancient, rugged lizards can be spotted on the rocky shoreline they have adapted to inhabit. A male and female of the species can be appreciated in these photos.

    Davinci --- when we were down in April we noticed some of the iguanas had what appeared to be painted numbers on their back. Was this some part of a research program doing an inventory count of some type?

    Yes, that is correct, Bob. There is a group from the University of Kentucky doing research and a conservation project with the black iguanas. They paint numbers on them to identify individuals.
