seagrape wildlife

The other day I was noticing the wildlife in the seagrape tree outside my apartment. These photos show white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica) and the green iguana (Iguana iguana). Since the animals on the property are largely protected from hunters and poachers, the resort acts as a wildlife refuge. Whether you are aware of it or not, wherever you got at Paya Bay there are always cute, friendly, curious, tropical animals watching you.

winter storm in black & white

Yesterday (and for the 24 hours before it) a strong cold front slid across the Gulf of Honduras. I'm guessing its the same front that has resulted in record low temperatures in many places in North America. One thing about stormy weather: it makes for great photos. Here are some I took yesterday. I opted for the unique beauty of black and white photography.

exploring Leonardo

This year I want to do a deeper exploration into the life and life experience of Leonardo da Vinci, the 15th Century erudite, polymath and genius extraordinaire I was named after. Perhaps share a bit about how being named after this amazing human being has affected my life in the 20th and now 21st Century.

masquerade ball

The Vitruvian Man

The Vitruvian Man (Italian: Le proporzioni del corpo umano secondo Vitruvio, which is translated to "The proportions of the human body according to Vitruvius"), or simply L'Uomo Vitruviano (Italian pronunciation: [ˈlwɔːmo vitruˈvjaːno]), is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man. It is kept in the Gabinetto dei disegni e stampe of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, in Venice, Italy, under reference 228. Like most works on paper, it is displayed to the public only occasionally.

desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
