Wintry weather in Roatan

Today it's been a "cool" 75 degrees here in the Bay Islands as an Arctic cold front moves through the area. We've had some rough seas and squally, rainy weather.

Outer bands of Nana

This morning the outer bands of tropical storm Nana started moving over the Bay Islands. Storm clouds and stormy conditions have their own unique beauty.

Hurricane Isaias in the hood

Even though category one Hurricane Isaias is over 1300 kilometers from the Bay Islands, its presence has stirred things up here in the Western Caribbean, including ominous clouds, squalls, showers, rougher seas, a noticeable storm surge. The rains are welcome as we've had a drier than usual July this year.

The beauty of the storm

Last week we had a cold front move through the Bay Islands. I took some pictures of the stormy, rainy weather as it could be appreciated at Paya Bay. Winter in the Caribbean...

The first cold front of the winter season is sliding in to the Gulf of Honduras and the Bay Islands during the next 36 hours. Late this afternoon I took these photos of the Paya Bay area before the stormy weather began to set in.

The first cold front of the 2017 winter season. The first front is usually the fiercest (as far as rain and wind are concerned) because there is so much stored energy and moisture in the tropical air it collides with.

october rains

One of the reasons we close Paya Bay and pause operations during October is that historically our rainy/winter season here in the Bay Islands begins this month. Typically, because the atmosphere is super saturated with tropical moisture, October will be the rainiest month and then it starts to taper off after that. We are certainly having a wet October this year. I took these photos during a delicious shower earlier today. It's like Mother Nature is recharging the island with life.

it's "cold" in roatan!

Google says it's currently 72 degrees (22 C) in Roatan. An Arctic cold front (largely defanged by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico) has been sliding across the Gulf of Honduras the past 48 hours. After some stormy weather, a gentle, cold rain is now falling outside. Note that the forecasted high for tomorrow is a mere 78 degrees (26 C). I've experienced it getting as cold as 65 degrees (18 C) here in the Bay Islands, but this is our more typical winter chill. After the front moves through, we'll get glorious, sunny beach weather again. Winter in the Caribbean!

it's starting!

12 PM local time. A view of the bay here at Paya. Rain is pretty steady now and there is a noticeable increase in the storm surge and wave action.
