Mahoe Variegated Sea Hibicus

The Mahoe Variegated Sea Hibiscus puts out a beautiful yellow blossom. Once fully mature, the yellow flowers helicopter to the ground and pretty consistently land face up. The flowers then start a beautiful metamorphosis from yellow to a crimson read, carpeting under their tree with their beautiful designs. It's one of few flowers that, arguably, become prettier AFTER they fall from the tree.

Fragrant sea palms

Marking the beginning of the Caribbean Spring, hundreds of sea palms (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii) are flowering all over the property, enhancing the balmy sea breeze with their sweet fragrance, while also producing an abundance of nectar for the island bees.

Fall foliage in the tropics

Fall is coming! This time of year the leaves of the sea almond trees turn brilliant shades of orange and red and then drop off.  As soon as they are bare, the trees immediately bud and put out a fresh generation of leaves. It's our short "fall foliage" moment here in the tropic where most other trees stay green year round.

Caribbean seashore fruits and berries

During the summer months many of our tropical seashore trees, shrubs, and palms around the property get heavy with fruits and berries. It's a bonanza of food for the birds and other wildlife!

A walk on the east side

On the east side of the Paya Bay property, behind the big beach, there is a wooded area with many interesting species of trees that provide shade and tropical beauty for an exercise walk. The older tress in the area have seen a storm or two.
