Attention, President Obama and President-elect Trump: When it comes to climate change, you have been served—by the nation’s future. Last week a federal judge in Oregon upheld a magistrate judge’s court ruling that a lawsuit against the U.S. government and its fossil fuel policies filed by 21 young people ages nine to 20 can proceed. “This is no ordinary lawsuit,” U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken wrote in a 54-page decision that upheld every argument the plaintiffs put forward, calling it a “landmark case.” The lawsuit challenges federal decisions made on a vast set of topics, Aiken wrote, including carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and vehicles, extraction of fossil fuels on federal land and how much to charge for its use, tax breaks and subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, funding of fossil fuel infrastructure, and construction of marine coal terminal projects.

My dear friend, Lisa Bronkhorst of South Africa, planted these large pots of aloe plants on the main deck during her stint at Paya Bay. The aloes flower during the rainy season when water is abundant. The radiant flower stems that pop up beautifully and dramatically always remind me of my friend's cheerful and sunny personality.

Latinos are poking fun at the uncertainty many face in the new United States of Trump.

Translation: "That natural look so they don't confuse you with an illegal"

Financial remittances from family members living either legally or illegally in the United States are a vital economic lifeline for family members many immigrants leave behind. In the case of Honduras, for example, remittances from abroad represent nearly 20% of the country's GNP. This yearly inflow of hard currency (US$3.7 billion in 2015 according to the above chart) boosts the country's economy, creates local jobs, and greatly aids in social stability (resulting in fewer people finding themselves with the desperate need to leave in order to seek better opportunities in North America).
